Steven Avery of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, was convicted of first-degree sexual assault, attempted first degree murder and the false imprisonment of Penny Beerntsen. He was arrested and quickly convicted of all charges in 1985. Avery maintained his innocence. He spent eighteen years in prison before he was assisted by the Wisconsin Innocence Project. He was eventually exonerated when improved DNA testing of evidence indicated that another man had committed the sexual assault. The DNA was a match to a Gregory Allen. Mr. Avery’s extensive legal troubles inspired Making a Murderer, a documentary series narrating the miscarriages of justice he encountered.
